[texts]ITO-MgF2 Film Development for PowerSphere Polymer Surface Protection - Hambourger, Paul D.
Multi-kilogram class microsatellites with a PowerSphere electric power system are attractive for fulfilling a variety of potential NASA missions. However, PowerSphere polymer surfaces must be coated with a film that has suitable electrical sheet resistivity for electrostatic discharge control, be resistant to atomic oxygen attack, be transparent to ultraviolet light for composite structure curing and resist ultraviolet light induced darkening for efficient photovoltaic cell operation...

Results of an experimental and theoretical investigation into the effects of the time dependent neutral wind flywheel on high-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics are presented. The results extend our previous work which used the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere/Ionosphere General Circulation Model (NCAR TIGCM) to theoretically simulate flywheel effects in the aftermath of a geomagnetic storm...

[texts]Beamed and Unbeamed X-Ray Emission in FR1 Radio Galaxies - Worrall, Diana M
Work during this period concentrated on a systematic application of the same analysis techniques to all the Fanaroff and Riley Type 1 (FR1) radio galaxies in this program. Software developed for background and exposure corrections was installed and run on the data-sets for the eight sources with PSPC exposures. Radio maps were superimposed on the ROSAT images of several of the radio galaxies. The X-ray contours were overlayed on the digitized Palomar Optical Sky Survey images available from STSc...

[texts]The Heat of Formation of HNO - Lee, Timothy J.
The HNO molecule is of interest in both combustion and atmospheric chemistry. For example, Guadagnini et al. have recently presented ab initio potential energy surfaces for the three lowest lying electronic states of HNO and then used these in examining several chemical reactions that take place in the combustion of nitrogen containing fuels and in the oxidation of atmospheric nitrogen. We have previously studied the ground state potential energy surface (i.e., stationary points along the HNO re...

[texts]A New Test Method for Material Flammability Assessment in Microgravity and Extraterrestrial Environments - Olson, S. L.
The objective of this research is to modify the well-instrumented standard cone configuration to provide a reproducible bench-scale test environment that simulates the buoyant or ventilation flow that would be generated by or around a burning surface in a spacecraft or extraterrestrial gravity level. We will then develop a standard test method with pass-fail criteria for future use in spacecraft materials flammability screening...

[texts]Controlled evolution of an RNA enzyme - Joyce, G. F
It is generally thought that prior to the origin of protein synthesis, life on earth was based on self-replicating RNA molecules. This idea has become especially popular recently due to the discovery of catalytic RNA (ribozymes). RNA has both genotypic and phenotypic properties, suggesting that it is capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution. RNA evolution is likely to have played a critical role in the early history of life on earth, and thus is important in considering the possibility of life ...
